Herniated Discs
A herniated disc occurs when the soft, gel-like center of an intervertebral disc pushes through a tear in the tougher outer layer, potentially compressing nearby spinal nerves and causing pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the back, neck, arms, or legs. Herniated discs are among the most frequently diagnosed causes of radicular pain — the type of pain that radiates along the path of a nerve, such as sciatica traveling down the leg. At Coastal Spine & Pain, Dr. Webb has extensive experience diagnosing and treating herniated disc conditions using advanced interventional techniques designed to reduce inflammation around the affected nerve, alleviate pain, and support the body’s natural healing process. Diagnostic evaluation typically includes a detailed history and physical examination, review of MRI or CT imaging, and in some cases, electrodiagnostic studies to assess nerve function. Treatment options may include transforaminal or interlaminar epidural steroid injections to deliver anti-inflammatory medication directly to the site of nerve compression, along with a structured rehabilitation program to strengthen the supporting musculature and improve spinal mechanics. For patients whose symptoms do not respond adequately to conservative and interventional measures, we work closely with spine surgeons in the region to ensure timely and appropriate surgical referral when indicated. Many patients with herniated discs experience significant improvement with interventional treatment alone, and our goal is to help you avoid surgery whenever possible while achieving meaningful pain relief and functional restoration.
