Epidural Injections

Epidural steroid injections are one of the most commonly performed and well-established interventional procedures in pain medicine, and they represent a cornerstone of the treatment services offered at Coastal Spine & Pain. The procedure involves the delivery of a corticosteroid anti-inflammatory medication, typically combined with a local anesthetic, into the epidural space — the area surrounding the spinal cord and spinal nerves within the spinal canal. By placing the medication directly at the site of inflammation and nerve irritation, epidural injections can provide targeted relief that oral medications often cannot achieve because of the limited ability of systemic drugs to reach therapeutic concentrations at the specific site of pathology. Dr. Webb performs several types of epidural injections depending on the patient’s diagnosis and the location of their pain, including interlaminar epidural injections, transforaminal epidural injections (which deliver medication more precisely to a specific nerve root), and caudal epidural injections. Common conditions treated with epidural steroid injections include herniated discs, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, radiculopathy (sciatica), and post-surgical pain. The procedures are performed using fluoroscopic guidance with contrast dye confirmation to ensure accurate needle placement and medication delivery. Most patients can return to normal activities within one to two days. A series of up to three injections may be recommended depending on the patient’s response, and many patients experience significant relief that enables them to participate more effectively in physical therapy and functional rehabilitation.
